What's in a name?

So remember ages ago when I was wondering what my name meant?

Turns out that I wondered the same thing years ago.

I was archiving old DL entries just now and found an old post (now archived here). Wow, that was when Friday Five actually had its own domain--a long time ago. The topic was names, and one question was about--you guessed it--name meanings. Here's the text of that question, and the answer:

5. Is the analysis of your name at kabalarians.com / triggur.org / astroexpert accurate? How or how isn't it?

Here's the Kabalarians analysis:

The name of Sujin has given you the desire for creative, artistic or musical expression in an original way. You strive to be different and have the self-confidence to implement your ideas because you have the perseverance necessary to see something through, despite obstacles. Although you meet new people easily, it is not easy for you to maintain a relaxed, harmonious relationship. With increased familiarity you are inclined to speak your mind in a forthright, sometimes argumentative manner which creates annoyance and often hard feelings. In an argument, you usually emerge victor, but at a cost. This name does not offer the softness of expression for long-lasting compatibility in close associations.

[snip for boringness]

From the Irish root meaning "Crooked"
Sujin does things with housecats illegal in 47 states.
Sujin would not be a good candidate to babysit your children.
Sujin is a genetic freak of nature.
Sujin is a quiet loner.
Sujin uses violence as a means of self-expression.
Sujin is often violently flatulent.
Sujin isn't overwhelmingly intelligent.
Sujin is terribly over-confident.

**
Yeah, these crack me up. Now here's what the Kabalarians analysis says:

* Although the name Sujin creates the urge to be versatile and ambitious, we stress that it causes blunt expression that alienates others.

* This name, when combined with the last name, can frustrate happiness, contentment, success, as well as cause health weaknesses in the liver, bloodstream, and tension or accidents to the head.

* The name of Sujin has given you the desire for creative, artistic or musical expression in an original way.

* You strive to be different and have the self-confidence to implement your ideas because you have the perseverance necessary to see something through, despite obstacles.

* Although you meet new people easily, it is not easy for you to maintain a relaxed, harmonious relationship.

**
Oh, that's really encouraging. I love how you can order a name report for your first and last name and ask for a refund if you disagree. "Page seven doesn't agree with my personality! Give back my money!"

Let me weird things up a bit more. Now Friday Five makes their home at thefridayfive, and sometime last year I completed one of them. The topic? Names. Yeah. Weird.

Mmmm... names. Don't you know that name etymology is one of my secret obsessions?

Now I'm determined to discover the true meaning of Sujin... because I'm curious. And I rarely meet a name I can't find the meaning to.

I also must look into this Kabalarians that you speak of.

Ok, I think I figured it out but now I can't find the various pages that I found the meanings on... oops.

Anyways, if I'm remembering this correctly Su (also spelled Soo I believe) means something like excellence or long life and Jin means jewel. I think that's correct. Also, Korean names are generally constructed of two syllables and are taken from actual words in the language. These two syllables are often written separately which is probably why Sujin is so hard to find on name meaning sites. It's probably written more often as Su Jin or Soo Jin or something like that.

Some of that might be totally wrong, but that's pretty much what I was able to glean from my google search. I told you I'd find it. :)
