When we talked about Emerson, Thoreau, and the like in my eleventh grade English class, we received a sheet with quotes on conformity. Since I like quotes and can never think of good quotes at the right time, here's the list.

The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs. -Ralph Waldo Emerson

To be great is to be misunderstood. -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. -Ralph Waldo Emerson (according to Wikiquote, also attributed to Muriel Strode)

Whenever you find that you are on the side of the majority, it is time to reform. -Mark Twain

It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation. -Herman Melville

One who walks in another's tracks leaves no footprints. -Proverb

It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude. -Ralph Waldo Emerson

I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward. It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. -Henry David Thoreau

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. -Henry David Thoreau
