I just went to the ASC math department website in search of the women mathematicians site and stumbled upon the schedule of math classes for next year. Two things I noticed:

1. Apparently community hour/community naptime has changed or has been eliminated. It was 10-11am Monday, Wednesday, and Friday when I was a student. This was when everyone loved scheduling their morning events. Something must have changed, though, because I noticed classes definitely happening during that time on MWF.

2. The regular class schedules in general have changed. The math department may not be the best sample to go by because they're known for their crazy scheduling, but there are more fifty-minute classes than I remembered, and most of them are on regular MWF schedules or Tuesday/Thursday. Even linear algebra is on a 65-minute schedule on MWF, as opposed to 50 minutes four days a week. Even multivariable calculus is fifty minutes three days a week, as opposed to fifteen more minutes two days a week. This never happened before. When did the math department back down on this? Did the students revolt? From what I remember, the math department always tried to schedule around the students' other majors or minors. Mine was pretty easy, and being ahead of completing the major didn't hurt, but those who were doing other science majors or minors had a hard time. Most of the time it was the science departments screwing things up!

3. Classes are starting at the half hour instead of the hour. Except for the math department, which has to have a class start at 8:15 instead of 8:30, and which has to have a class go fifteen minutes over for a few classes. But there's nothing crazy from my student days. None of this two days at one time and another day at a completely different time, or an extra fifteen minutes two days. Only two classes meet four days a week.

What has Agnes wrought?

It's all over the place now. The community hours are on Tuesday and Friday (plus one other day I can't remember) and the Friday one starts at two.

Needless to say, it's great material for JP but it's not good for much else.

Whaaat? Seriously? The weekend started at two on Friday as far as I was concerned. Well, except for that one class that loved to meet at two on Friday. Good luck having events then.

They totally rearranged the schedule and put community hour at lunchtime. Everyone at the writing center is really upset because now their weekly meetings will be during lunch instead of having a nice breakfast. URGH. So basically, all the really involved students will lose 20 pounds in the next semester...

Maybe the wellness center is in on it?

That's madness. I'd be all for a later community hour, but lunchtime? Really? Say goodbye to event attendance...unless, of course, all the events are in Lower Evans.

And maybe the Wellness Center is in on it. That's a thought.

I usually slept or Internetted during community hour stuff unless I had an 8:45 class. Thanks, math department. I wanted those extra fifteen minutes.
